Trump and Japan's Recently Appointed Premier Exchange Praise and Commit to Strengthen ‘Extraordinary’ Relationship

In the course of a latest visit to Japan's capital, former US President Donald Trump together with the Japanese recently elected Prime Minister Takaichi shared friendly compliments and pledged to enhance the already strong two-way relations.

Highlights from the Meeting

Donald Trump praised Prime Minister Takaichi as a ‘exceptional’ figure and congratulated her on assuming the role of Japan's inaugural female prime minister. In their talks at Tokyo's Akasaka Palace, Trump voiced confidence that she would become one of the ‘great prime ministers’ of Japan.

The prime minister, identified as a protégée of former Japanese leader Shinzo Abe, applauded his initiatives to resolve international disputes and reportedly pledged to put forward him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Trade and Security Deals

Both governments announced a series of joint initiatives in areas such as power, artificial intelligence, and rare earths. Japanese companies are exploring funding of up to $400 billion in the United States.

Furthermore, Japan had previously committed $550bn in strategic American projects, financing, and assurances as part of an arrangement to secure relief from Trump's tariffs.

Such moves are seen as possibly reducing any upcoming demands from Trump for Japan to increase its defense spending. Takaichi addressed this by committing to fast-track plans to raise defense spending to 2% of GDP.

Other US Politics Developments

  • Trump did not rule out to a third term, though it is constitutionally not permitted. Trump remarked he ‘would like’ to serve again but would not exploit a vice presidential loophole.
  • A Michigan congresswoman Rashida Tlaib reacted to his comments, saying, “Under no circumstances will we allow that.”
  • California Governor Newsom indicated he will decide on a 2028 presidential run after the upcoming elections.
  • The head of America’s biggest government employees union called for an end to the federal closure, which is now the second-longest in American history.
  • House Speaker Mike Johnson blasted opposition figure Jeffries for endorsing a contender in the NYC mayoral election.
  • Indiana governor Braun announced a legislative meeting to reconsider electoral maps.
  • Democratic figures in several regions are planning map changes in reaction to Republican efforts.
“Based on what I’ve heard from Shinzo and others, you are destined to be an outstanding prime minister,” Donald Trump told the prime minister. “I’d also like to congratulate you on being the first woman prime minister. It’s a big deal,” he continued.

This encounter highlights the ongoing significance of the US-Japan alliance and sets the stage for additional cooperation on trade, security, and foreign policy areas.
