The Prince of Wales will participate in the key Cop30 in the South American nation next month, though the PM's attendance remains undecided.
Prince William will present the Earthshot prize and attend the gathering of officials from more than 190 nations in the Brazilian city.
Environmental experts applauded the royal's involvement. A sustainability expert commented that it would enhance what is anticipated to be a challenging meeting, where global consensus on updated goals for reducing carbon emissions is essential.
"Is the Prince's attendance at Cop a stunt? Certainly. But it doesn't imply it's a bad idea," she remarked. "Cop has long been as much about what's termed 'optics' as it is about negotiations. The Prince's announcement will probably motivate other delegates to commit, and will capture international press."
"I suspect the Prince knows very well that by showing up, he'll bring millions of attention to the summit. In an era when environmental effects are increasing, but media coverage is dropping, any effort that highlights the issue should be applauded."
The monarch has participated in earlier climate conferences, but will not be going in this one.
A representative from a sustainability organization remarked: "All hands on deck – and every prominent figure like Prince William, present assisting make the case for the challenging task that is required, is likely a positive development."
"[King Charles was in his previous role when he went to the Glasgow summit and contributed to galvanise negotiations. I don't think it necessarily needs the prince and the king to go."
The British prime minister has not yet said if he will attend the conference, to which all international officials are invited, with many set to attend. The leader was heavily criticised by leading climate advocates for appearing to waver on the decision in recent weeks.
"World leaders must be in Brazil for the climate conference. Attendance is not merely symbolic, it is a measure of commitment. This is the moment to lock in stronger national commitments and the funding to achieve them, especially for resilience" to the effects of the climate crisis.
"Global citizens is observing, and posterity will record who showed up."
