A brave railway staff member who stepped in to save travelers during a mass stabbing attack on a high-speed train has sustained life-threatening wounds, authorities stated on Sunday.
CCTV video allegedly shows the staff member trying to stop the assailant as the train traveled between Peterborough and Huntingdon in the county. Witnesses recounted a terrifying 14-minute duration after the train departed Peterborough, with injured passengers fleeing through carriages.
The individual, a 32-year-old citizen from Peterborough, is in detention for questioning. Police announced a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.
The incident on Saturday night led to 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at the station in Huntingdon. Five people have since been released from hospital.
A bystander recorded the suspect waving a large knife and being subdued with a Taser as he confronted officers on the station. He was allegedly heard yelling, "Kill me, kill me."
“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. Our sympathies go out to the injured and their loved ones – especially the brave employee of train personnel whose relatives are being supported by specialist personnel,” stated a senior law enforcement official.
Rail associations were swift to praise employees and demand increased measures. A labor official said he would be “requesting urgent meetings with government, train companies and law enforcement to ensure that we have the best available assistance, resources and robust protocols in place”.
A different association representative encouraged the rail company and authorities “to move quickly to examine security, to help the affected workers, and to make sure that no incident like this occurs again”.
The train driver who halted the train at Huntingdon was reported as being “deeply affected” but “good”, and has been commended by union officials for doing “exactly the right thing”.
“He didn’t halt the train in the middle of two stops where it’s clearly difficult for the first responders to access, but he continued traveling until he got to Huntingdon, where the response was pretty much waiting,” stated a association representative.
Authorities stated they got the first emergency reports at 7:39 pm, and the train was compelled to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
One observer described at first thinking if the situation was a Halloween joke, but quickly realized from individuals' expressions that it was serious.
Authorities have stated there is nothing to indicate the incident was a terror-related attack and have requested the community to come forward with any additional information.
Rail operations on the impacted line are expected to have delays until Monday, with passengers recommended to defer their travel where feasible.
Individuals with details that could help the inquiry are encouraged to reach authorities by texting a specific number with a case code.
